Posted:Wolfquest has been mentioned here before, but not in a while. Causes of gambling. Just today, a demo version of WolfQuest: Amethyst Mountain has ben released and can be downloaded from the official website, here: http://www.wolfquest.org/demos/index.html
Be warned, the download is just over 60 MB, and that's before you unzip the file.
I've already played it for a bit and here's what I'm thinking so far: WolfQuest was started as a means of educating our younger crowd about wolves, and at the same time, making it fun to play as a game; So far, I'm not dissapointed in the gameplay. I start up the game (all you need is to unzip the file you download and your good to go), and The first thing after setting the screen resolution and all that, was to create a wolf avatar. I was able to choose between a number of classic coat patterns and add a little tint of color to change how he looks, and I'm also given three sliders representing strength, speed, and stamina to customise his stats. Finally, I can choose a gender, and name him.

Once that is done, I find myself in a very dry-looking desert-grassland environment, and I am pretty much free to do what I wush. The graphics look good, and almost overwhelm my puny CPU, to the point where I had to reduce my resolution in order to maintain a viable framerate.
Big win online. I'm not exactly told where to go or anything, but the controls seem very fluid, and I pick them up quite quickly. As I wander araound this landscape, a rabbit rushes by in front of me, and having nothing better to do, I play a little game of chase with it and after a bit of time and effort, I manage to kill it, but I cannot eat it as I'm already at full health, so I reluctanty leave it be. I press a button and instantly Scent mode kicks in, the landscape turns to grayscale and I can see a brightly colored scent trail that was left by that rabbit, and a different colored trail which, according to the little box that pops up, belongs to a male coyote at full health. I follow it, and have some fun harrasing it before it too falls before my wolf's mighty jaws.

I cant see anything else to do right no, but the game is only a demo, the full release will be in Dec., and I'm sure it will all come together to make an excellent learning experience.

Oh, and when I pressed H on my keyboard, my wolf did a wonderful sounding howl, which sadly did not get any answers, but if I pressed the button repeatedly, I got a nice 'chorus howl' effect. I found an excellent use for this by turning down the music volume, and hitting the howl key whenever a trick-or-treater came to the door. I figure, even if I didnt have time to put a costume together, I can at least add to the spooky halloween atmosphere, right?
The demo looks and plays great, and I cannot wait until December to play the full game
